Michael Woods | Evolution Show with Pete TONG Mon, 17 Nov 2014 20:07:34 +0000 HQ_DJ_PAGE_988x490_MICHAEL_WOODS_NEW1

After first breaking onto the scene, as a then teenager, with 2000’s top 20 UK hit ‘Warrior’, going on to produce Example’s only UK #1 & 1.5 million selling single ‘Changed The Way You Kiss Me’ and holding down a residency at world-renown Las Vegas nightclub Hakkasan, Woods is a well and truly established force to be reckoned with.

From an early age, Woods has prided himself on standing apart from the crowd. The son of a music teacher, the U.K.-born Woods was classically trained in a variety of instruments ranging from piano to percussion, and as a youth he even performed briefly with the London Symphony Orchestra. The experience this musicality has brought now sets his productions apart and gives him an edge on contemporaries.

If that were not enough, Woods launched his own record label, Diffused Music, in 2008. Initially created as a way to have more freedom and control in the creative process, Diffused has rapidly become one of the premiere collectors of talent in the business. With it’s goal to find and nurture new talent, artists could not be in better hands under Michael’s guidance.

With new material already in the bag, including his forthcoming releases on dance powerhouse Spinnin Records, the now US based Woods is poised to have a major impact on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come.

DJ FIVE | TWERKIN’ LIVE @ TAO Tue, 23 Sep 2014 01:34:07 +0000 The Life and Times of DJ Five…

He’s either standing behind the turntables or sitting at the poker tables. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And maybe a little sleep, but that’s his business. Whichever tables you find him at, just keep in mind that DJ 5ive is dangerous.

Groomed in one of the epicenters of turntablism, Cerritos CA, it was a simple task for DJ 5ive to become the top seed in Las Vegas, Nevada. With DMC-caliber skills, impeccable mixing, a vast knowledge of music, and a love for Hip Hop that has spanned decades, DJ Five has emerged as the one definitive go to man in Sin City’s burgeoning nightlife industry. He was voted the #1 DJ of 2004 in Las Vegas’ eyes-and-ears, LAS VEGAS LIFE MAGAZINE. When pressed to reveal what has put him there, he states “I can smoke, drink, text message, dance, mix, and cut all at once.”

He does all the big Las Vegas events and has played at every hot spot in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. DJs across the nation show him love whether he’s the visitor or the visited.

Initially inspired by DJ Premier’s work on the Gangstarr classics, DJ Five honed his craft by mimicking DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Live at Union Square. His knowledge of rock and pop music came from those late nights spent in Las Vegas strip clubs, all the while straddling that line between mainstream and street cred by associating himself both with the “backpack” Hip Hop movement and paying close attention to the trajectory of Hip Hop as it crossed over into popular culture.

His eclectic tastes and eccentricities behind the wheels of steel soon brought him into the company of 5 other like-minded DJs: Vice, Graham Funke, OB-One, StoneRokk, and Cobra. Together, they formed the Abe Froman Showmen in an attempt to preserve DJ culture and restore the term to its original glory by promoting creative programming, good music, and competent mixing…the heart of DJing, which has lost some of its shine in this era of celebrity guest spots and new jack wannabes. Fact: The Abe Froman Showmen rock parties; Let DJ Five prove it to you.

After landing a residency at a Gold Coast, Australia hot spot in 2010, Sarah was handpicked to be an Official Playboy Bunny at the Sands Macau, China, quickly becoming the Face of the only Playboy Club in Asia and resident Playboy Club DJ. dj schoeny | #realDJing Wed, 27 Aug 2014 00:03:12 +0000 Life is good.

Such a phrase can be seen upon initially shaking his hand or simply catching a glimpse of him at work. These tattooed letters on DJ Schoeny’s hand certainly aren’t the only pieces of inked art emblazoned on his 6’2” frame, yet (depending on if he’s in the right state of mind) may be the only visible indications one receives upon first sight of this man. Regardless, Schoeny’s art embodies this artist’s state of mind, as well as provides a roadmap of the journey that had led him to his current city, San Diego, that of which houses arguably some of the finest musical talent on the DJ scene.

Every DJ seemingly has their own story, their own format, and their own motivations that drive them to spend countless hours practicing, searching, sharing, and ultimately playing music all in the name of entertainment. For DJ Schoeny aka Justin Schoenenberger his story began in Northern California, his format was cultivated via Fijian neighbors that happened to be DJ’s. Junior high and high school house parties served as his early clubbing days, scenes in which Schoeny would essentially develop his love for the beat, his passion to combine music tattered and innovative in the name of a creating a mix, and envision the destination to the rest of his life—all of which are founded and inspired by his love for music. With these early days, Schoeny successfully discovered his ear for the technical aspect of creating music, his skill in producing a sound all his own, and an organic energy that came from playing his creations live, and never ceased to lose grasp of his vision of becoming what we know to be a DJ.

Fast forward ten years later, and Schoeny has successfully placed himself further down the golden California coast, with the additions of more Mohawk-ier hair and much more permanent color on his skin. Underneath his surface, however, DJ Schoeny is arguably one of the most unique and passionate DJ’s in America’s Finest City. With feet that have travelled to places such as Japan, Switzerland, Guam, China, Florida, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Texas, and of course, the Las of the Vegas, and eyes that have greeted and opened for acts such as Sander Van Doorn, The Black Eyed Peas, Scooter and Lavelle, Gym Class Heroes, Dj Frances, G Roy, JuniorTheDiscoPunk, JJ Flores, Chromeo, Pauli P, Black Sheep, Dj Scotty Boy. Schoeny’s passion and drive has cemented himself in the ever-expanding world of DJing. He continues to persist and to strive, and has no intentions of falling out of line. Nor do his fans wish him to.

In a city immersed with nightlife jockeys that have been around the track for more than a few races, DJ Schoeny stands out in a uniform all his own, colors recognizable yet distinctive. In the sense of his style, it can be argued that Schoeny gravitates towards open format, freestyle, hood house, and electro. The style of “mash-ups,” on the other hand, don’t necessarily serve up his style accurately. Schoeny masterfully folds in lyric and beat, whisking up a product of his own flavor, one that can be sampled when in person during one of his ever-unique sets, or at one’s own leisure while thumping his albums “Fraggle Rock” or “The Golden Ticket.” The experience of witnessing a performance by DJ Schoeny certainly speaks for itself, yet is not a difficult one to acquire, as DJ Schoeny continues to make his rounds throughout San Diego, expanding his venue list as time ticks by; in fashioned count, of course.

Life is Good. For DJ Schoeny, life is indeed good…and is continually getting better.

DJ Zebo | Trap To The Future X Tue, 26 Aug 2014 23:47:30 +0000 Peering at the crowd from behind his thick-rimmed specs, head nodding like a metronome; his sound is one of confidence and controlled frenzy, as highlighted in Newcity Magazine, where he was honored in their annual Music 45 issue—alongside the likes of Kanye West, Andrew Bird and Smashing Pumpkins—as one of the top 45 musical artists in Chicago. This was just after being listed in URB Magazine’s “Next 100” issue and recently voted “Best Local Dj 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014” by the Chicago Reader Viewer Poll.

“…Zebo packs a cut-up crateful of styles, from hip-hop and B-more to French, Electro, Disco and even a nasty snippet of a techno track or throwback freestyle gem. While this maximal approach might be increasingly common among DJs who cater to the ADD-riddled mash-up club casualties, Zebo stays head and shoulders above the rest for knowing that just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Skills can be honed, but taste can’t be taught…”

Although house and jungle dominated his early turntable diet, Zebo is a polygamous lover of music, and he hustled to find any opportunity to play, be it raves, loft parties, weddings, corporate parties, in-store events and fashion shows. He is also an instructor at Columbia College teaching both a Club Dj part 1 class as well as an advanced part 2. Outside of which he runs the Chicago-based, Hot Dog Records with partner Marco Morales. A label that focuses on releasing any style of music and artists that represent Chicago.

It is this genuine love of music paired with incredible deck acumen that propels DJ Zebo beyond the reach of all the other DJs trying to out-reference, out-cred and out-mix each other, their varied selections resembling 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound laptop. Zebo’s not simply wearing his musical heart on his sleeve—as the WAV file tattooed on his ever-moving forearm might seem to indicate—but actually spinning dance floor gold with both his technical abilities and intuition in reading the crowd, a modern day Serato-equipped Rumpelstiltskin.

Yet for all his vaunted versatility, no matter what direction his sets head, Zebo’s initial love of jungle seems to subconsciously permeate his music at peak hour, with bombastic basslines rolling on and on underneath familiar hooks and clever samples. Pitched-up, pitched-down, scratched-up and around, Zebo’s a populist at heart, finding the redeeming values in both subterranean cool and overt pop—it’s a delicate tightrope to walk, but this DJ has the balance to pull it off.
